Bananas are, of course, a mainstay of the Guatemalan economy.
In 1954 the
Eisenhower administration , the Central Intelligence Agency,
and the
U.S.-owned United Fruit Co. backed a coup in Guatemala by Colonel
Castillo Armas against democratically-elected President Jacobo
Arbenz, who had
carried out a land reform program that led to major losses for
the company.
