Modern Grammar - OPTIONAL PRACTICE SENTENCES

Instructions: This is NOT an assignment that needs to be turned in. We will go over the tree structures for these sentences in class on Thursday, 4/9. [If you'd also like to practice building the grammar rules, etc... for these trees, use the LLAMA Syntax windows in Assignment 8 (i.e., use the simple parser; there should be no need to use the full parser which searches for all possible parses for a sentence...)]

Sentences with subordinate conjunctions:

  1. While the band played, the crowd cheered.
  2. The elephant stamped its feet because it wanted peanuts.
  3. The game continues until somebody wins the prize.
  4. If this is love, I have made a terrible mistake.


Sentences with verbs that take sentences as arguments:

  1. The scientists thought that the moon heated the sun.
  2. The suspect denied that he knew the victim.
  3. I wonder if you can tell that I can hear you.
  4. Simon said that we should shake our heads and spin our arms.
  5. I can see that the parents believe that the circus will know that the children are hoping that the clown will have balloons.


A mix:

  1. When we arrived at the dinner party, the host noticed that we were carrying wine and flowers.
