Diagram each of the following sentences, and watch out in particular for adverbs and adverbials:
- Think fast.
- We had already worked out all the implications.
- The gigantic dragon was very slowly turning its massive head.
- Everybody must have been told the rumors immediately.
- Fred's car is an extremely expensive one.
- There suddenly appeared a slightly tipsy ghost.
- Did the deep, dark woods always make Dorothy afraid?
- The spell surely must have been recited incorrectly.
- Is my entry really a potential winner?
- Carefully bring them several large decaffeinated cappuccinos now!
- All the untrained volunteers became rather serious workers.
- Which friend drove you there?
- Luckily, Mary's team looks ready.
- Unfortunately, It’s a Wonderful Life is his favorite movie.
- What an extremely unusual gift that zookeeper brought me!
- Which button turned that shockingly bright light on yesterday?
- Somewhat surprisingly, extraordinary things turn up every day. (Note that "every day" is adverbial here. Where should it go, and how can you still show that "every" modifies "day"?)
- The young man's claws should have seemed quite strange. (There's a diagramming issue related to dependent genitives in this last sentence that we haven't discussed. See if you can figure it out. :) )
