- Living in a tree would not be fun.
- After we left, someone turned off the lights.
- My doctor says that it is essential that we eat our vegetables. (This sentence has an extraposition as PART of it.)
- One of the following sentences is an extraposition (E), one is an ordinary sentence with an ordinary, meaningful "it" pronoun (O) , and one has a "filler-it" just like the extraposition but is a different type of transformed sentence that we have not yet named (X). Label which one is which and write a sentence explaining how you know:
- It was beauty that killed the beast. _________
- It fell to the ground without making a sound. _________
- It is well-known that the squeaky wheel will get the grease. _________
- In each of the following sentences, there is an embedded sentence modifying a noun. Only some of these embedded modifiers are noun complements -- those ordinary S-bars that modify a certain kind of noun. In other examples, the modifier sentences are more unusual and the nouns being modified are not necessarily the kind that can take noun complements. For each sentence underline the noun modified and try to state whether or not (YES or NO) the modifier is an S-bar. For those you do not think are S-bars, do you notice any kind of pattern to what is unusual? One hint -- consider a kind of pronoun we have not yet used in syntax... No diagramming needed here!
- The whole conference was devoted to discussing the idea that war is a necessary evil.
- His certainty that we would be late was getting tiresome.
- The burglar who invaded our home was never caught.
- This cathedral is similar to the castle that we saw in Italy.
