Students enrolled in ENG512E are required to do all the work specified in the shared syllabus for ENG422/512E. For graduate credit, however,
ungraded assignments will count as 5% of the final grade rather than as 15%, and class participation, while expected, will not be a part of the grade for the course. A research paper, the topic of which will be chosen in conjunction with me, will constitute the other 15% of the final grade in ENG512E. ENG512E students should meet with me early in the semester to chose a paper topic relating the study of grammar to their broader academic and/or career interests. The research paper is due on the Monday of the last week of class. It must be at least ten pages in length, not counting large examples/data samples/etc. I encourage graduate students to keep me informed of their progress on their research papers, and I'm happy to provide guidance and feedback during the semester. (Also, if any graduate student is interested in doing a significantly larger research project and having it constitute a larger percentage of his/her grade, he/she should discuss this possibility with me no later than one week before the first test.)
