In-Class Exercises #3

Image Mapping

Image mapping allows you to turn an image in GIF format into a clickable map by designating hotspots within the GIF and specifying a URL link for each defined hot spot.

  1. Open the My Computer icon. Select the C drive. Create a new folder called Map Edit.
  2. Get the Map Edit program from http://www.boutell.com/mapedit/download.html. Note that you will have to unzip the program. Alternately, copy the files from the L drive. Go to the L drive, open the Faculty folder, open the Wright folder, open the MKTG 498 folder, open the MapEdit folder (L:\Faculty\Wright\MKTG498c\mapedit\) and copy all of the files to your Map Edit folder.
  3. Also copy the catfish.gif file to the Map Edit folder.
  4. In Netscape, create a blank html file. Select New from the file menu, then select Blank. Add a link to the catfish.gif file. Save this file on you diskette as a:\catfish.htm.
  5. Launch Map Edit. Open your Map Edit folder and double click on the Map32 icon. Or do this by clicking on the Start button, select Run, select the file c:\Map Edit\Map32.exe, and click OK.
  6. Browse until you find catfish.html file. Select this file and click OK. In the next window, select the catfish.gif file. You will now see the main Map Edit window.
  7. Check out these URLs: Belzoni city map, Catfish recipes, Mississippi home page, and Catfishing on the Web.
  8. Using your mouse, copy the URL of the Belzoni Mississippi map. Go to the Map Edit program. Using your pointer, select the word Belzoni and double click when you are done. A window for the URL will open; copy the URL of the Belzoni city map into this box.
  9. Do the same for Mississippi: select the Mississippi home page URL in Netscape, go to Map Edit, select the word Mississippi, double click, then enter the URL in the box.
  10. Do the same for Catfish recipes; copy the Catfish Recipes URL from Netscape, select the words Catfish Recipes, double click, then enter the URL in the box.
  11. Test your links by clicking on the selected words. A box with the appropriate URL should open up.
  12. What happens if you click outside of a hot spot? You can set a URL for this area as well. In Netscape, copy the URL for Catfishing on the Web. Go to the File menu, select Edit Default URL. Enter the URL in the box.
  13. In the Map Edit program, go to the File menu and select save.
  14. Load the file catfish.htm into the browser. Congratulations, you have created your first clickable image map!

For this assignment, turn in the catfish.htm file on diskette.
