In-Class Exercises #4
Exercise A
Before posting to any E-mail discussion list or UseNet News Group discussion
forum, make sure you read the list/group charter, FAQ file
(Frequently Asked Questions),
and information on Netiquette. For example, I run two e-mail lists
devoted to BYU sports called Cougar-Net
and Cougar-Best.
Check out the Cougar-Net
list charter and the Cougar-Net
Netiquette file. Currently, we do not have an FAQ file for Cougar-Net.
Now, post some messages to the class e-mail discussion list. Specifically, send a new message to the list. Then find another message someone else sent in and respond to it. Make sure your messages comply with the Netiquette file you have read. To get credit for this assignment, I will need to be able to read both notes (I will also get copies of all messages).
Exercise B
I want you to search through
the many News discussion groups and e-mail discussion lists. Find at least
two Newsgroups and two E-Mail Discussion Lists that are somehow related
to marketing on the Internet. For this assignment, you only need to list
the address of the News groups and provide the necessary information for
subscribing to the E-Mail lists.
Send me a brief e-mail message with your answer (remember to set your Netscape mail settings!). To get credit, your e-mail message must be received before the timestamp on an e-mail message I will mail to myself at the end of the exercise.
Exercise C
Take the NBA
Lottery Pick Survey, even if you know nothing about the NBA. Criticize
this poll. What information do you learn? We will discuss this in class.
Exercise D
Go to the Alta Vista search
engine on the web. Search for information on Marketing Research
on the Internet. What do you find? How many pages did your query turn
up? What use are your results?
Next, try "Marketing Research on the Internet" (don't forget the quotes). What do you find? How many pages did your query turn up? What use are these results?
Now, go back to the Alta Vista search engine home page. Click on the Advanced button at the top of the page. On the new page, type "Marketing Research on the Internet" OR "Internet Marketing Research" (again, don't forget the quotes!). What do you find? How many pages did your query turn up? What use are these results?
Finally, try Marketing NEAR Research NEAR Internet. Again, what do you find? How many pages did your query turn up? What use are the results?
Exercise E
Using the password provided in class, request the configuration file
from majordomo@zilker.net (use
the command "config marketing password" inserting the appropriate
password and eliminating the quotation marks). Using commands from the
Edit menu, select all information and copy it. Then open up the
Notepad program and paste the configuration file into a notepad
file. Edit the configuration file up to so that the following commands
are activated:
Print out your configuration file, write your name on it, and hand it in to me.
