Bookmarks Notes

  1. Open Bookmarks Window
    1. Choose Bookmarks from the Window menu
    2. Choose Go to Bookmarks in the Bookmarks menu
    3. Note: Unless otherwise stated, the remainder of these instructions assume that you are operating in the Bookmarks window.
  2. Navigating with the Bookmarks Window
    1. Double click on a bookmark
    2. Single click on a bookmark and choose Go to Bookmark in the Item menu
    3. Double click on folders to see the contents of the folder.
  3. What's New?
    1. Netscape can tell you if your bookmarks have been updated or changed since the last time you looked at them.
      1. Select the bookmarks you wish to check.
      2. Choose What's New? In the bookmarks window's File menu
      3. If you made a selection, click Selected Bookmarks in the dialog box. If not, click okay.
      4. A dialog box will appear that charts Netscape's progress.
      5. Netscape displays changed bookmarks with "bright" marks.
        1. Bookmarks that Netscape was unable to analyze are marked with a question mark.
  4. Setting the New Bookmarks Folder
    1. By default, Netscape sets the principle folder to receive all new bookmarks. However, you can change this.
      1. Click once on the folder to which you want new bookmarks to be added.
      2. Choose Set to New Bookmarks Folder in the Item menu. The new bookmark folder will have the bookmark icon in it.
  5. Setting the Bookmarks Menu folder. The Booksmark menu is generated from the bookmarks in the Bookmarks window in order to give you rapid access to your bookmarks. You can choose which folder in the Bookmarks window is used to create the menu.
    1. Click once on the folder which you want to generate the Bookmarks menu (you can choose any folder at any level of the Bookmarks window).
    2. Choose Set to Bookmark Menu Folder in the Item menu.
    3. Your new configuration will be displayed the next time you click on the Bookmarks menu in the browser.
  6. Adding a Bookmark from a Web Site
    1. Easiest way: click on the Add Bookmark in the Bookmarks menu.
    2. Drag the chain link icon into the Bookmarks window.
    3. Right click on a link and then choose Add Bookmark in the pop-up menu.
  7. Creating Aliases of Bookmarks
    1. Click on the bookmark of which you want to make an alias.
    2. Choose Make Alias from the Item menu. The alias will appear below the original bookmark.
    3. Drag the alias to the new location.
    4. Every time you make a change to the original location, all aliases will change as well.
  8. Creating a Bookmark Folder
    1. Select the folder in which you want to create the new folder.
    2. Choose Insert Folder in the Item menu. The Bookmark property dialog box appears.
    3. In the Name field, type the name for your new folder.
    4. In the Description field, enter a few words that define your category.
    5. Click okay.
    6. Drag bookmarks or other folders to the new folder.
  9. Editing a Bookmark or Folder
    1. Click once on the bookmark you wish to edit.
    2. Choose Properties in the Item menu. The Properties dialog box will appear.
    3. Change the name, URL, and description as desired.
  10. Adding a Separator.
    1. Choose Insert Separator in the Item menu
    2. Click on the bookmarks menu to see your new separator
  11. Sorting your Bookmarks File
    1. Choose Sort Bookmarks from the Item menu. All folders and bookmarks will be sorted alphabetically.
  12. Saving a Bookmarks File. You can save bookmarks files to give friends, use as backups, or as a stand alone web page.
    1. Choose Save As from the file menu.
    2. Give the file a name and choose the directory in which to save it.
    3. Select file type (.txt or .html).
  13. Opening a Different Bookmarks File
    1. Choose Open in the File menu.
    2. Select the bookmarks file you wish to open.
    3. The old bookmarks file will remain intact in its current location.
  14. Open Bookmarks File as a Web Page.
    1. In the browser, choose Open File in the File menu.
    2. Select the Bookmarks file.
  15. Importing Bookmarks
    1. Choose Import from the File menu.
    2. Choose the bookmarks file that you wish to import.
    3. The bookmarks in the imported file are added to the current bookmarks file.
