Scanning and
Modifying Images

Scanning and modifying images is a helpful tool in developing web sites. For this exercise, we will make use of the H-P scanner in the Zane Showker computer lab.

Follow the instructions listed on the PINK SHEET next to the scanner in the lab. These instructions are self-explanatory.

IMPORTANT!! When you save your scanned files, make sure you save them as a Windows Bitmap file. LView Pro is supposed to also work with .tif and .PCX files, but I haven't tested this out. I know it does work with .bmp files.

Next, go out to the web and download the LView Pro Image Viewer. After you have saved to your disk (remember where you saved it!), press the Start button, select Run and browse until you load the LView Pro file, lvsetup.exe.

Launch LView Pro after you have installed it. Call up your scanned image into LView Pro. Note that you may have to select the file type in the Files of Type box on the open window. Once you have the file in your window, there are many things you can do with it. Do the following exercise.

  1. Launch LView Pro
  2. Open the chrysler.bmp file (located on the L drive, in the Faculty folder, in the Wright folder, in the MKTG 498c folder, or L:\Faculty\Wright\MKTG 498c\chrysler.bmp).
  3. Using your mouse, select the two cars. Go to the Edit menu and select Crop! This will eliminate other portions of the file.
  4. Have some fun now. In the Edit menu, select some of the Flip and Rotate options.
  5. When you are done playing, use the Save As... option to convert the .bmp file into a .gif or .jpg file, which are files that most web browsers can read.
  6. Congratulations! You have converted a scanned bitmap file into a browser readable .gif or .jpg file.

Now you are ready to go on to In Class Exercise 2.
