DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION
COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Description: The communication major at Utah State University, leading to the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism, is designed to prepare students for careers in a wide range of communication fields, through instruction in the philosophical groundings, theoretical perspectives and hands-on applications of communications practice. The curriculum integrates practical mass communications skills training with critical thinking skills and understanding of the processes and effects of communication, and the relationship, roles and interactions of mass communications with other social institutions.

Concentration areas: Broadcast and Electronic Media; Media Studies; Print Journalism; Public Relations/Corporate Communications.

Requirements: Majors must take a minimum of 30 and maximum of 36 credits in Communication, pursuing one of the four concentration course sequences outlined below.* Of the basic 120-126 semester credits needed to graduate from Utah State University, Communication majors must take at least 90 credit hours outside the major, including 65 in the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Beyond the basic 120-126 hours needed for graduation, students may take as many COM courses as they like. In addition, majors must complete a minor/cognate area outside of COM, and a minimum of 18 credits from the department's list of approved "Breadth Requirements," courses in groups/disciplines outside the major. Thus, the basic Communication course of study looks like this:
