Background

Sedivy joined the Communication faculty in the fall of 1995 as a 14-year, veteran mid-career newspaper editor, coming to Logan from Mansfield, Ohio, where he was executive editor of the News Journal. Previously, Sedivy served as a roving training editor for the Thomson newspaper chain, designing and conducting training programs for Thomson newspaper staffs and advising the newspaper group's Eastern Division chief operating officer and the company's director of editorial development. He also has served as executive editor of the Warren (Ohio) Tribune Chronicle, worked at other newspapers in Ohio and Indiana, and taught at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. At USU, Sedivy teaches news writing and reporting, publication design and oversees student stringers working for the northern Utah bureau of the Salt Lake Tribune, based in the Department of Communication.

Research/Professional Activities

In addition to his newspaper work, Sedivy consults with newspapers and conducts training sessions in writing, reporting and newspaper redesign. His true love outside the newsroom, however, is whitewater canoeing, and he has just produced a book titled River's End: A collection of bedtime stories for paddlers, published in summer 1995 by Big Dog Publications, of which Sedivy is president.

"Writing for a newspaper is a lot like running whitewater-sometimes you ace the rapids; sometimes you hit a rock and have to swim. When you do fall out of your boat, you just have to climb back in and go on to the next run."
Bill Sedivy

"I first met Bill Sedivy when he was city editor of the Richmond (Ind.) Palladium-Item and recruited him to serve as a key visiting professional faculty member at Ohio University. At that time, I thought Sedivy was, in both classroom and newsroom, one the best 'teaching editors' for young reporters that I'd ever met. I still think so."
