Usual disclaimer:  Grading and other plans are subject to change. We will be sure to give you ample prior notice.  This course will NOT provide a day-by-day course grade update on CANVAS.  For your currect status, you should instead combine your test grades (these will be listed separately on CANVAS for information purposes) along with your other  grade informatin (webassign provides an updated total for homework) to estimate your current grade, based on the above distribution.

Mathematics Tutoring: Help is also available through the Science and Mathematics Learning Center.

Attendance: Regular class attendance is expected.

Review

Typical week outline: A CANVAS module will be supplied for each week. This will often include one or more required short videos to watch BEFORE class.  WEBASSIGN  assignments should be  completed as much as possible in the designated week, but will typically have their final due date on the following Monday  to allow for final completion of remaining questions.

Videos before class:  This shifts your time commitment a bit, but should not add to it.  Videos will be pretty short, briefly (we hope) introducing new or new-ish material.  During the video it may be helpful from time to time to go back and view something a second time, or stop and take a look at the text when something is not clear.  This will cut down on class time spent on (usually "snoozy") lectures.  Thus, in addition to going over some of your questions, more class time will be spent with you working problems (often together), and the following individual homework will be correspondingly shorter than it normally might be, since you have then already completed some work with the necessary concepts. Admittedly, this plan comes as an attempt to preserve some of the few good things from the chaotic previous year. Working remotely then was a pain, but we did get that some basic things can be done remotely, so perhaps we can use that to spend more class time on actual activities.  This does not work unless you are actually doing the pre-class preparation - if that does not happen, we will need to switch back to more conventionial  "lectures." Note that there are course points associated with the videos.

Graphing Calculator: Recommended.TI-83/84 or equivalent is adequate.

Academic Honesty: Strict adherence to the JMU Honor Code is expected. Further information may be found at www.jmu.edu/honor

Catalog

MATH 231 and MATH 232 form a sequence that combines first-semester calculus with algebra and trigonometry. The sequence is designed for students whose pre-calculus skills are not strong enough for MATH 235. Calculus material in MATH 231 includes limits and derivatives of algebraic functions and their applications. May be used for general education credit. Not open to students who have already earned credit in MATH 234 or MATH 235. Prerequisite(s): MATH 155, MATH 156 or sufficient score on the Mathematics Placement Exam. MATH 231-MATH 232 together are equivalent to MATH 235 for all prerequisites.
