Speculative Fiction - Assignment 4

James Madison University

Instructions:(This will be graded only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.)

  1. In Chapter 10 (Dragon) of Ender's Game, Ender singles out a little boy named Bean for special treatment. To what extent is he doing to Bean the same things that have been done to him? Compare at least one specific quote (anywhere from a fragment of a sentence to 4 sentences long) taken from an earlier chapter to another quote from Chapter 10 to show how Ender's treatment is or isn't identical in some particular way to how he himself has been treated. Why are these good quotes?
  2. From chapter 12 (Bonzo), choose two small quotes (no more than about a sentence or a small dialogue exchange each) that provide interesting information about the novel. Think again of the types of details one might focus on in a close reading -- setting, advancing the plot, character development, mood, thematic development, etc. and explain what type(s) of detail each quote provides and consider also how a quote might provide this information(direct reference, allusion, imagery, etc.) Make sure to choose excerpts that you are confident you understand and that reveal something interesting upon reflection. :)
  3. Finally, try to come up with at least four or five different words or phrases to complete the statement below that you think you could support based on what we have read so far of this novel:
Ender is concerned about being ___________________.
