Speculative Fiction - Assignment 2
James Madison University
|
Instructions:[This assignment will be evaluated only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. Reminder - At-home assignments should be typed and a hardcopy, should be printed for submission. Please remember to put your name and the assignment number on this assignment.]
- Find and write down the quote on our online syllabus just below the tentative schedule for the semester.
-
Write three different very short summaries (rough guideline: about 80-100 words each) for
"Death and The Librarian@quot; -- one summarizing the elements of the plot (the progression of action in the story), a second summarizing the timeline of important events in
the librarian's life as they occurred over "real" time in the fictional world of the librarian (ie. not necessarily in the order that you read about them in the story), and one summarizing the character of the librarian (ie., what kind of person is she? What is her personality like? While you may mention a plot detail or generalization here, the point of the paragraph should clearly be to describe the librarian).
- Label each paragraph for the type of summary it provides and explain how you decided what particular information to include/exclude from each paragraph.
- Describe one way that summarizing requires you to be an "active" reader.
[Note: You'll want a hard copy of "Death and the Librarian" (and future stories) for your in-class use.]
