• Look at the handout that summarizes the discourse coherence relations proposed by Hobbs. Then, using that handout (and the article, if it helps!), try to write your own very simple examples for five of the ten relations. In other words, pick the five relations that seem clearest to you and, for each, create or find your own little "discourse excerpt" consisting of a pair of discourse segments (minimally two sequential "utterances") that illustrate that relation.
  Sidebar: If you want, you can treat the ORIENTATION relation as two out of your five choices if you can create a pair of examples that contrast the special cases of that relation involving CAUSE and ENABLEMENT.
  

  We'll use the examples you all come up with to help in our class discussion, but you will also turn your attempts in for assignment credit.
