  1. Do exercise 2 (on anaphora) on page 12 of your text.
  2. Choose or create a sentence of about 10-12 words. Then, using a thesaurus (an online one is fine for our purposes), find one synonym listed for at least four of the words. Rewrite the sentence with those four synonyms substituted for the original words. Describe what, if anything, you see as the impact on the meaning and coherence of the sentence.
  3. What is a hyponym for dessert?
  4. Do you think Mozart is a hyponym of composer or a potential referent for that word?
  5. For each of the following concepts, write down either a word for or a description of something that you would consider a typical example of the concept. Demonstrate why you think it is typical by using a"so test" as described on page 21 of our text:
    1. 'fruit'
    2. 'car'
  6. For each of the following concepts, write down either a word for or a description of something that you would consider an atypical example of that concept. Demonstrate why you think it is atypical by using a"but test" as described on page 22 of our text:
    1. dragon
    2. career
  7. Would you say that 'dexterous' is a DISTINGUISHER for 'scultor', ENCYCLOPEDIC INFORMATION about sculptors, or part of what we know about the CLASSIFIER for 'sculptor'? Explain your choice.
