Nonliteral Meaning - Assignment 3

James Madison University

Instructions: [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]

  1. Consider the following word-shapes tool, utensil, spoon, fork, and tablespoon. Describe as many semantic relations between them as you can (using your own personal understanding of these words, not a dictionary :)).
  2. Give your own definition for a lexeme SPOON (more specifically, choose just one specific definition associated with the word-shape tool) that uses one of the other words above as the classifier in your definition. Explain why you chose that particular classifier.
  3. What's an example for you of a typical tool? Use the correct test to demonstrate why your choice seems typical.
  4. In what way(s), if any, might your encyclopedic knowledge about spoons and shovels be connected?
