Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 3

James Madison University

[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.] After reading Chapter 2, do your best with each of the following excercises.

  1. Do exercise 3 at the end of Chapter 2 (Brain and Language) in your text.
  2. Find information on the origins and the changes in form and meaning (i.e., the "etymology") of three of the following words: "awful", "reliable," "malaria," "pedigree" (noun), and "jurisdiction." Then explain the etymology in your own words. Etymological dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) are good sources for this kind of information. JMU users can access the OED online through our library website; there's also a link on the bottom of this page. If you cannot use the online OED, the library also has physical copies of the OED and other etymological dictionaries.
