Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 6
James Madison University
Draw tree diagrams representing the morphological derivation of each of the following words:
senseless
debriefed
revolving
nonverbally
Using just the eight somewhat simplified phrase structure rules on page 133 in your text, attempt to draw tree diagrams for each of the following sentences:
The rooster crowed.
The cooks spoiled the broth.
The alien walked into our classroom. [Hint: "Our" is a determiner. Look up "into" if you're not sure of its word class. :) ]
My friend believes that our dogs talk.
[Give this your best shot. Note that "my" is also a determiner and "that" is a complementizer. ]
Ask a friend (a native speaker of English, please) to describe all the subgroupings of words that he/she thinks
go together in the c and d sentences above. Don't tell your friend any rules or make suggestions; just write down what he or she says.
Do your friend's intuitions match with the groupings made by the phrase structure rules?
