Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 13 James Madison University |
[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort, but you must do all parts of the assignment.]
- As discussed in class, there are two different rules that account for the fact that the plural morpheme /z/ has three allomorphs, [z], [s], and a third that has a lax vowel inserted before [z]. Those two rules are summarized on page 227 of our text. In your own words, explain why it is argued that the underlying form of the morpheme is /z/, not /s/, and why the rule that our text labels rule 1 must apply before rule 2.
- Do exercise (22) on page 276, which is practice with allomorphs (rather than allophones).
- Finally, if you know it or can get the information from your family, write down your first word as a baby and how old you were when you said it.
