Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 5

James Madison University

  1. Draw tree diagrams representing the morphological derivation of each of the following words:
    1. senseless
    2. debriefed
    3. revolving
    4. nonverbally
  2. Using just the thirteen somewhat simplified phrase structure rules on page 98 in your text, attempt to draw tree diagrams for each of the following sentences:
    1. The rooster crowed.
    2. The cooks spoiled the broth.
    3. The solution was obvious.
    4. The alien walked into our classroom. [Hint: "Our" is a determiner. Notice that "into" has a spatial, relational meaning. If you aren't sure what word class "into" is here, you can try checking out word class handout. You can get in touch with me if you still can't figure it out. :) ]
    5. My friend believes that our dogs talk.
    6. [Give this your best shot. The rules on page 98 are not enough; you need to look at the first appendix at the end of the chapter -- but to avoild an additional complication, you can keep using "S" for sentences instead of "TP." Note that "my" is also a determiner and "that" is a complementizer in this particular sentence. ]
  3. Ask a friend (a native speaker of English, please) to describe all the subgroupings of words that he/she thinks go together in the "c." and "d." sentences above. Don't tell your friend any rules or make suggestions; just write down what he or she says. Do your friend's intuitions match with the groupings (i.e., the constituents expected by the phrase structure rules?
