  1. From the phonetics chapter of our textbook(ch. 5), attempt Exercise 1 for all the examples that you determine to start with a consonant SOUND and Exercise 2 (but also just for the words in that exercise that, in this case, END with a consonant sound).
  2. Re-read the discussion in Chapter 5 of vowel sounds in English and then, using the chart on page 207 to help, write down what you think the symbol is for just the vowel sound in the middle of each of the following words:
    1. rich
    2. reach
    3. rude
    4. road
    5. fail
    6. fell
    7. could
    8. cooed
