Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 12

James Madison University

[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort, but you must do all parts of the assignment.]

  1. (A little more practice with IPA) Give a broad phonetic transcription (i.e., no need for any diacritic marks) for each of the following words and phrases:
    1. flags
    2. change
    3. cloudy
    4. groomed
    5. quiet
    6. pushy
    7. treasure
    8. wedges
    9. acute
    10. business
    11. cloth
    12. who took my granny's shawl
  2. Do exercise (4) on pages 266-167 of our text. This is practice with determining the difference between allophones of one phoneme and distinct phonemes. It therefore is data from another language (specifically, Korean). For the last part (writing the "rule"), you can just use English to describe what happens when.
  3. Do exercise (13) on page 271 of our text (just examples a-f). Note that to do the examples with aspirated consonants, you'll need to review the basic discussion of the unaspirated and aspirated allophones of certain English consonants, which is on pages 231-232.
  4. Map each syllable in the following two words into their syllable structure (ie. its onset -- when applicable, its nucleus, and its coda - when applicable):
    free, unclaimed.
(Remember that syllable structure is based on sound, not spelling, which means you ened to start with a phonetic transcription!)
  5. Ask your parents (or any other older adults you know well) what expressions, if any, they hear you use that they do not use. Write down their response.
  6. Ask any two friends what their favorite native English dialect is, if any. What was their response?
  7. List at least one word or expression from your own idiolect that you know is not used by all American English speakers and describe what you think the speech community is for this expression (eg., your age group?, your geographic region?, people in the JMU marching band?, other?).
  8. List at least one word or expression that you know some English speakers use but that you don't use.
