Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 7

James Madison University

  1. First, using the same rules as from the previous assignment, draw phrase structure trees (tree diagrams) for these three additional sentences:
    1. The clowns seem unhappy.
    2. Our neighbor is an alien (note: "our" and "an" are determiners)
    3. The man in the moon waved.
  2. Using the sentence "The fish were wearing goggles in the lake" as a d-structure, write two different s-structures for that sentence that would result from different transformational processes described in Chapter 3 or from some other one that you think you recognize as a possibility, and then describe the transformation you performed for each.
  3. Do just examples a, b, h, and i, of Part One of Exercise 5 at the back of Chapter 4.
