(Optional Review)If you had trouble with examples assigned in Exercises 24 and 25 of Chapter 4 for the last assignment, go back and try a couple examples from each exercise again, writing down either what maxim led you to infer the particular implicature you see in each example or why you're not sure which maxim is at work.

  3. What are the five specific problems with trying to convey the sounds of our language with our alphabetic writing system, as described on pp. 192 -193? Give an example of each.
  4. What, according to Chapter 5 of our textbook, are the seven "places of articulation" relevant for the description of English consonant sounds?
  5. How many nasal consonants are there in English?
  6. Using the charts on pp. 204 and 207 to help, attempt Exercise 6 (just examples b-i) in our textbook.
