James Madison University
|
[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort, but you must do all parts of the assignment.]
- Do your best phonological reasoning to try to answer Exercise 4, on pp. 264-265 in your text (both parts).
- Using your knowledge of English words and your English intuitions about word sounds, do Exercise 13, p. 271 (but you don't have to provide any answers in the "Reason" category).
- (Re-read) the discussion of syllable structure in Chapter 6 and attempt to map each syllable in the two words below into their syllable structure (ie. onset -- when applicable, nucleus, and coda - when applicable):
free, unclaimed
(Remember that syllable structure is based on sound, not spelling!)
Looking ahead to sociolinguistics:
- Ask your parents (or any older adults you know well) what expressions, if any, they hear you use that they do not use.
- List at least one word or expression from your own dialect that you know is not used by all American English speakers.
- List at least one word or expression that you know some English speakers use but that you don't use.
