Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 17

James Madison University

[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort, but you must do all parts of the assignment.]

  1. Browse through Chapter 9 again and write down one question you have and/or one thought about your own experience with (or observation about) with language acquistion. PUT THIS IN THE TEXT BOX ON CANVAS IF YOU'RE NOT SUBMITTING A WHOLE ASSIGNMENT DOCUMENT.
  2. Do Exercise 2 at the back of Chapter 9 (you might want to look back to page 404-407 for the discussion of auxiliaries and question formation.)
  3. Also attempt Exercise 14 at the back of this chapter.
  4. What is a transfer error? Can you think of an example of a transfer error you have made in your efforts to use a foreign language?
  5. School-aged children moved from their L1 environment to one where the local language is different, may regress in their L1 ability before they have yet reached an age-level-based norm for competence in the new L2. This is a particularly difficult case of what phenomenon discussed in the "Heritage Language" section of this chapter?
  6. One challenge for L2 learners is to master culturally different expectations for how an utterance should be interpreted (i.e., to understand certain pragmatic aspects of communication in the L2). Consider the following examples, each of which involved a communicative missunderstanding. For each, speculate about what might have gone wrong in the exchange. (Answers will be provided afterwards. :) ):
    1. An American man invited a Hungarian woman on a date. She replied, "I can't. I'm busy that night." He said, "Okay, maybe next time." What went wrong there?
    2. A Japanese teacher complimented an American student. The student said, "Thank you!" What went wrong there?
