Introduction to Linguistics - Assignment 7

James Madison University

  1. If you haven't already, take a look at the articles available on CANVAS and then write down the title of at least one that you think might be a good choice for the first critical summary you will write for this course.
  2. Using just phrase structure rules from p. 92 in our textbook, draw phrase structure tree diagrams for each of the following sentences:
    1. The cooks spoiled the broth.
    2. The experiment succeeded.
    3. A rooster crowed.
    4. A cat walked under the ladder.
    5. The professor wondered whether the students identified this structure.
  3. Which one of the sentences above involves recursion?
  4. Based on the discussion of transformations in your textbook, including the possible difference between the deep (d-)structure of a sentence and its surface (s-)structure, write down what seems to be the d-structure of each of the following sentences (just the sentence itself, not a phrase structure tree for that sentence!):
    1. Should that door close?
    2. In the woods lived a band of werewolves.
    3. What movie did you watch?
    4. There are too many people in this boat.
