James Madison University
|
[This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]
- In the discussion of truth-conditional semantics at the start of Chapter 4, what term is introduced to describe sentences like "When everything is said or done, there's nothing left to say or do."
- Do Exercise 5 in Chapter 4 (Just do e,f,g, and h in Part One and c,d, and h in Part Two)
- Do Exercise 1 in Chapter 4 (just parts a, b, and c) to practice using Semantic Rule 1 (where the output of the rule is True or False) and Semantic Rule 2 (where output is a set). (Note that a new handout on CANVAS entitled "semantic terms and concepts" has a section on semantic rules that might help you with these questions.)
- Give at least two entailments for the following sentence, one a lexical entailment and one a structural entailment (labeled as such):
- Lonely leprechauns are scribbling sonnets in my basement.
- According to our textbook, what are the different types of phenomena that happen "when compositionality goes awry?" (pp. 141-146). Give your own example of just one of these (made up by you or just noticed in some other context. :) )
- Moving on to lexical semantices --according to our textbook, what are three different types of antonyms? (See the section on Lexical Relations.)
