Modern Grammar - Assignment 12

James Madison University

Instructions: This assignment contains both some more practice with word class details, plus some practice with new material from this week. [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. ]

  1. Create a sentence in the present tense that uses a transitive, dynamic verb, and then create a list of the possible variants of the tense and auxiliary structure of that sentence in both active voice and passive voice by varying grammatical tenses, the presence or absence of a modal auxiliary, and the perfect and progressive aspect auxiliary structures. Your sentences should look similar to those on the back of your auxiliaries handout. Note that, for variants with a modal auxiliary in them, you can just choose one modal; you don't need to use each different modal as another example! Label the form of each of your sentences (for example, "past perfect").
  2. For each of the following sentences, do your best to determine and write down the tense and auxiliary features. When a modal is used, you can just describe that feature as "modal." Remember that you do not specify tense when there is a modal.
    1. The aircraft was landing.
    2. The vampires are being hunted by werewolves.
    3. Those mummies might have been unwrapping their bandages.
    4. Everyone can be silly sometimes.
    5. Some of the gardeners have not harvested their pumpkins yet.
