Modern Grammar - Assignment 3
James Madison University
|
Instructions: [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]
- Make a COMPLETED copy of both the consonant chart and the vowel chart in Chapter 2. (If you'd like a clean copy of the blank charts handed out in class, you can find a file called "Blank Phonetics Charts" under FILES on CANVAS.)
- What three vowel symbols are missing from the vowel chart in our textbook (but described in the text), and what is special about the three vowel sounds they represent?
- Write out each of the vowel sounds in English in a list and then, next to each one, write a word in English that you think contains that sound. (Ex. [i] "beach")
- Give an example of an English word that starts with a voiceless sound.
- Which one of the following sounds is a voiced stop? (/t/, /z/, /d/, /s/)
- Using your textbook and your consonant chart to help, attempt to transcribe (ie., to give the IPA symbol for) just the first sound in each of the following words:
- mansion
- spleen
- yellow
- kind
- classic
- queen
- chorus
- thanks
- woods
- glove
- juicy
- shell
- gnome
- heat
- cheesy
