  2. For the morphemes below, identify the following characteristics (where applicable): root vs. affix, free vs bound; derivational vs. inflectional

    2. {-cur} in "recur"
    3. {-est} in "quickest"
    4. {-er} in "teacher"
    5. {pencil} in "pencil" (the noun)
    6. {mis-} in "misguided"
  3. Make your best attempt at Chapter 3, Exercise 5 on page 81.

  4. Consider the following data from Dozoff, a well-known language spoken only in the JMU Libraries:
    togpozz   'big party' drupozz   'long party'
    togruf  'big assignment'     togrufin   'big assignments'

    1. List the five different morphemes in these Dozoff words and assign a meaning to each of them.
    2. Based on this data, how would you say 'long assignment' in Dozoff?
  5. Finally, (re)read the section of our textbook on the hierarchical structure of words and then attempt to answer the following questions about the word "unthinkable."
    1. What is the root morpheme?
    2. What affix do you think must attach to the root first and why?
