  1. Diagram each of the following sentences:
    1. After we left, someone turned off the lights.
    2. The poet keep changing the metaphors in his sonnet because they sounded awkward and ruined the poem's meter.
    3. The winds blew very loudly through the night, but the baby slept well.
    4. We heard the university cancelled all exams. (look at the direct object of "heard" :) )
    5. That the squeaky wheel gets the grease frustrates quieter people. (Look at the subject of "frustrates")
    6. The revelation that the lion loved the mouse shocked everyone. (look at what modifies "revelation")
    7. She is afraid that her feet grow larger on a daily basis. (Look at what modifiers the adjective "afraid")
    8. The singer faced the fact that he was tone-deaf.
    9. The librarian had a secret fear that his brain might be getting full.
    10. Undoubtedly, many customers complained that the food was bland and overcooked.
    11. The actor doubted if he got a part in the new sitcom. (Hint: remember that "if" can be a complementizer sometimes instead of a subordinate conjunction.)
    12. We suggested that someone write down our good deeds because they saved the world from a big disaster. (FYI, there is a structural ambiguity here concerning which VP the adverbial clause modifies, but you only have to choose one of the two possibilities to diagram. :) )
