  1. Underline the two coordinate conjunctions in the following rather long sentence and also circle the one subordinate conjunction:
    All my friend's clovers had three leaves, but most of mine had four, and I gave him several of the biggest ones because good luck should be shared with your loved ones.
  2. The following example contains either a subordinate conjunction or a "discourse connective". Using our textook and the handout now available on CANVAS (entitled "Conjunctions vs. Complementizers vs. Discourse Connectives"), attempt to underline the relevant word, to state which you think it is, and to explain why you think so:
    "I certainly will try to cook us something for dinner; however, I make no promises about the results."
    Also, is this example one complex sentence or two separate sentences?
  3. Based on the discussion on page 146 in our text and our discussion in class, classify the "or" in the following sentence as either inclusive or exclusive (explain your choice):
    "Is that banana ripe or is it unripe?"
  4. Re-write the following two sentences as one sentence making use of a subordinate conjunction. Underline the subordinate conjunction.
    The lion spared the mouse's life. The mouse helped the lion escape.
  5. Write a single sentence that uses two coordinate conjunctions, one used to conjoin two nouns and one to used to conjoin two prepositional phrases.
  6. Find the discussion of the EXISTENTIAL MARKER "there" in our textbook (FYI, also called the "expletive-there") and identify the single use of that existential marker in the following sentence:
    There is not doubt that the murderer was still there when we were in the basement. _____________________
