Modern Grammar - Assignment 13

James Madison University

Instructions: This assignment incorporates a little practice with verb subclasses and features, while having you make your first attempt to work with auxiliary and verb combinations. Use he relevant handout distributed in class (and available on CANVAS) to help you [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. ]

  1. First, choose a common dynamic verb that is also transitive. Then, write a VERY simple sentence in the present tense using that verb. Next, write versions of that same sentence corresponding to all the active voice variations listed on the back of your auxiliares handout. Describe their features as done on the handout. (Note that you can choose whatever modal auxiliary you want; you don't have to do all of them individually, and you don't have to label that modal's feature beyond saying "modal.")

  2. Again using the handout to help, attempt to characterize the auxiliary and tense features for each of the following sentences (examples -- present perfect, past progressie passive, etc.) When a modal is used, you can, as above, just describe that feature as "modal." Remember that you do NOT specify a grammatical tense when there is a modal auxiliary.
    1. The crowd fled.
    2. The aircraft was landing.
    3. An eagle has nested in that tree.
    4. The vampires are hunted by werewolves.
    5. Those mummies might have been unwrapping their bandages.
    6. Everyone can be silly sometimes.
