James Madison University

Instructions: [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]

  1. Find the one pronoun and the one determiner in the following sentence. Label each for which word class it is in, and also list the specific subclass and all the other more specific features of each:

Charles considered himself my best friend.

  2. Do Exercise 6 on pg. 130 in our textbook.
  3. Using the textbook and the prepositions vs. particles handout from class (also available on CANVAS), attempt to underline all the prepositions and circle the particles in the following sentence:

After some stiff drinks, the bearded lady from the local circus down the road looked at her diary with a sigh and then blotted out the name of the man who had just turned her marriage proposal down in the parking lot.

  4. Again using the textbook and the relevant handout, attempt to underline the two coordinate conjunctions in the following rather long sentence and also circle the one subordinate conjunction:
All my friend's clovers had three leaves, but most of mine had four, and I gave him several of the biggest ones because good luck should be shared with your loved ones.
  5. Based on the discussion on page 146 in our text, classify the "or" in the following sentence as either inclusive or exclusive (explain your choice):
"Is that banana ripe or is it unripe?"
  6. Re-write the following two sentences as one sentence making use of any appropriate subordinate conjunction. Underline your subordinate conjunction.
The lion spared the mouse's life. The mouse helped the lion escape.
