Instructions: This assignment contains both some practice with new material from the last two classes and some more general practice with identifying word classes. [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. ]

  1. What is your top question for pre-midterm review?

  2. Write a single sentence that uses two coordinate conjunctions, one used to conjoin two nouns and one to used to conjoin two prepositional phrases.

  3. The following example contains either a subordinate conjunction or a "discourse connective". Using our textook and the handout on "Conjunctions vs. Complementizers vs. Discourse Connectives"), attempt to underline the relevant word, to state which you think it is, and to explain why you think so:

    I certainly will try to cook us something for dinner; however, I make no promises about the results.

    Also, is this example one complex sentence or two separate sentences?


  4. Give two sentences (or two variants of one sentence) in which "hold up" is uesd as a phrasal verb, one where the two parts are together and one where "particle hopping" has occureed.

  5. Based on our discussion of the EXISTENTIAL MARKER "there" (also called the "expletive-there"), identify the single use of that existential marker in the following sentence:

    There is no doubt that the murderer was still there when we were in the basement.


  6. Attempt to label the word class of each word in the sentence below (except the two words that are already labelled in parentheses as auxiliaries :) ). Yes, this sentence should look somewhat familar...

    All my friend's clovers had three leaves, but most of mine had four, and I gave him several of the biggest ones gladly because good luck should(aux) be(aux) shared with the very special people in your life.
