English Discourse and Pragmatics - Assignment 3

James Madison University

[This assignment will be marked only as a sufficient or insufficient effort. As always, give it your best shot. :-)]

  1. Re-read the oral narrative text on page 238 (labelled example (28)) of the Prince article. Then, referring to the notation described in (29), look at the exact assumed familiarity level Prince assigns to the expressions from that narrative in (30) a-g. (You just need to do a-g, not the whole list!) For each of these expressions, write down why it was assigned its particular assumed familiarity level (unless you disagree, in which case you should argue for a different assumed familiarity level.)
  2. Reread the written language text in (39) on pages 247-248 of the Prince article. Then, using the details of her analysis in (40) and the discussion of this analysis that follows to help you, write a paragraph explaining why Prince felt the need to add the disclaimer "TO BE TAKEN WITH A LARGE GRAIN OF SALT" onto the analysis of this second text. :)
