  1. What are the correct tree structures for the following noun phrases and what are the phrase structure rules needed to build these tree structures? (Remember that to test your rules with llama-syntax (optional) you will also need to add categories and lexical items, and set the parser to have NP as a top node.) LLAMA HINT: HITTING THE 'UP' ARROW AFTER A CATEGORY WILL ADD A BAR; HITTING THE 'DOWN' ARROW WILL REMOVE IT.

  2. What are the correct tree structures for the following sentences, and what are the phrase structure rules needed to build these tree structures?
    1. The zoo put the ancient lion in its cage.
    2. The elephant sneezed.
    3. The awkward end of the story surprised me.
    4. The extremely defiant lawyers withheld their evidence.
    5. The very flashy, rather cheap sign seemed inappropriate.
    6. Several adventurers followed that ancient map to the treasure. (This one can be diagrammed two ways! Try to do them both. :) )
    7. Nobody resides in that dilapidated apartment!

  3. So, do you think you might be starting to understand how rules can be used over and over in a single sentence to make the sentence bigger? Try to write a new sentence that expands the sentence below simply by putting another prepositional phrase inside the one existing prepositional phrase:
    The cats watched the fish in the big tank.
