Instructions: Diagram each of the sentences below.

  1. None of those flashlights will work. (first use of the aux rule)
  2. Several people might have fainted in the store.
  3. The gazelle was not running very quickly. (first use of the neg rule)
  4. A bee has flown into that girl's hat. (first use of the rule that turns an NP into a det when it is morphologically marked as possessive)
  5. The invading army's alarm dashed the local rebel's hopes.
  6. I called up my personal astrologist on Tuesday. (first use of the verb plus particle rule))
  7. The man and his dog ate meatloaf for many years. (need to use a rule for a conjunction of NPs)
  8. The teacher passed out the milk and cookies. (a conjunction of "N bars")
  9. Your attitude is truly irritating and completely foolish. ( a conjunction of ? :) )
  10. That group's representatives can accept the offer or negotiate better terms.
  11. You should take the high road, and I will take the low road.
  12. Your answer may work, but I dislike it.
  13. Birds eat worms and fly.
  14. While the President spoke, the lawyers doodled. (First uses of the rule for sconj and the one for adverbial clauses)
