Instructions: [This assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]
This assignment is about the different subclasses of pronouns and determiners. Carefully rereading and considering the details of our textbook's descriptions of these word classes, make your best effort to answer questions and create charts or lists of subclasses (not necessarily pictured as in the book, which visually combines some subclasses!) as follows:
- Two charts for the personal pronouns, one for the subjective case pronouns and one for the objective case pronouns. In each chart, sort the pronouns by "person" and by "number", something like the following -- singular and plural as the two columns and first person, second person, and third person as the three rows. Doing that, you should have six spots within in each chart (such as a "first person singular" spot) and at least one pronoun in each spot!
- Make one similar chart for the possessive pronouns and one just like it for the possessive determiners. You may find you want to leave one spot empty for the pronouns of this type... Which possessive pronouns are exact homonyms with a possessive determiner?
- List the demonstrative pronouns and list the demonstrative determiners. How many of them are homonyms?
- Put the reflexive pronouns in a chart and the reciprocal pronouns in a list. Why didn't I ask you to put the reciprocal pronouns in a chart?
- List the words that are in the subclass of determiners called "articles." What's the main semantic feature that distinguishes between them?
- Some pronouns and determiners are used for asking questions. They are called interrogative pronouns and interrogative determiners respectively. List two interrogative pronouns that are marked for case just like personal pronouns. List three interrogative pronouns that are also used as interrogative determiners.
- There are special use pronouns and determiners called relative pronouns and relative determiners respectively. Most of them are homonyms with the interrogatives. One relative pronoun, however, is a homonyn with a demonstrative pronoun, a demonstrative determiner, and a complementizer. What is that relative pronoun?
- Finally, list any five indefinite pronouns.
