Modern Grammar - Assignment 13

James Madison University

INSTRUCTIONS: [The assignment will be marked only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort.]

  • MORE PRACTICE PRODUCING TENSE/AUXILIARY STRUCTURES
Create another sentence in the present tense that uses a dynamic verb that has a direct object. Create a list of 5 possible active voice variants of that sentence (in terms of tense/auxiliaries) and another of all the possible variants of that sentence in PASSIVE voice (i.e., varying grammatical tenses, the presence or absence of a modal auxiliary, and the two aspectual auxiliary structures). Note that, for variants with a modal auxiliary in them, you can just choose one modal; you don't need to use each different modal as a different example! Label the form of each of your sentences (for example, "past perfect"). You can also feel free to leave out the optional "by-phrase" that can be included in passive constructions after the first one.

  • PRACTICE IDENTIFYING TENSE AND AUXILIARY FEATURES
Identify the tense (where relevant) and auxiliary features of each of the following sentences:
    1. That very large rabbit might have been chasing a dog.
    2. The music had been playing for hours.
    3. April showers will be followed by May flowers.
    4. The decision had been made earlier.
    5. That salesperson is not being very helpful.
    6. I should certainly be following your advice.
    7. Have the coaches been informed of your decision?
