Great Works - Assignment 3 ![]() James Madison University |
Instructions:(This will be graded only as an acceptable or unacceptable effort. One of the goals of this exercise is to have you think about HOW an author, your culture, and your personal life experiences can shape your response to a literary work.
Write a few paragraphs explaining first (i) which character (Victor Frankenstein, the "monster", Robert Walton, etc...) in Frankenstein you empathize with most at this point and why, and then (ii) what evidence you see in the text (just through Chapter 15) that Mary Shelley did or did not intend for her readers to empathize with this character. Give at least TWO specific quotes from the text to illustrate the kinds of evidence you see. (Also note: empathy is not the same as sympathy... :) )
