Great Works - Assignment 8

James Madison University

Instructions:
From between chapter 13 and the end of the novel Ender's Game, choose just one small quote (not more than about one sentence long) that you feel adds some noteworthy information to the novel. Write down the quote then write a paragraph of at least three sentences explaining what can be learned from this quote and how we learn it. There are many, many good possible quotes to choose; just make sure to choose one that you are sure you understand and that reveals something interesting upon reflection. :)
To write your explanation, think of the types of questions of close reading we discussed in Monday's class, eg., what purpose(s) the excerpt serves in terms of plot, setting, mood, theme, character development, etc. More specifically, to fully develop your close reading for your quote, you might consider such things as WHY we are told the information, WHY it's told in the way it's told, WHAT we are told, WHAT we are not quite told but can reasonably infer from this quote, WHEN we are given this information, and so on.
Note that there is a handout of terminology in the course handouts file under documents on Blackboard. This handout includes most of those terms but not "character development," which refers to authorial choices that allow readers to gain more understanding of a character as an individual -- things that make a more "round" character rather than a "flat" character. This might include how a character is changing, but "character development" does not have to be about character change.)
