Great Works - Assignment 9

James Madison University

Instructions: Because the multiple snow days have forced us to cancel the debate, this assignment is a pared down experience related to what we would have done in the debate. One of the objectives is for you to get practice considering how quotes can be used to support arguments about literary texts.
BACKGROUND: The debate issue would have been the following: Which character is more moral, Victor Frankenstein or Ender Wiggin?
A couple considerations (though not at all an exhaustive list) related to this issue are the following: What conception of morality should apply in assessing these fictional characters? For example, what is more important in determining whether or not a person is moral – his actions, his intentions, his own assessment of his behavior, his moral development over time, or something else? Does evidence of the author's or narrator's opinion matter in any way or do we need to separate their opinions from the real answer to this question?
YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
Write down one argument that you feel could be made in favor of Victor and one that could be made in favor of Ender. For each argument, find and write down at least one quote (with page numbers) from either of the two novels that provides relevant evidence for that argument. Note that, in both cases, the evidence could come from either novel. For example, an argument in favor of Victor might be partially supported by something in his life/character/etc or by contrasting evidence about Ender, and vice versa.
