HISTORY1908Established by the Virginia General Assembly as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg.
1914Name changed to The State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg.
1924Name changed to the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg.
1938Name changed to Madison College in honor of the fourth President of the United States.
1966By action of the Virginia General Assembly, became a coeducational institution.
1977Name changed to James Madison University.
