Information on Papers.
Recall that you will be submitting two papers in this course.

The first paper due will be a biography of a mathematician of your choosing. For the second, more major paper, you will write a new chapter for Dunham's book that will center around a "great theorem" of your choosing.

Details about my expectations for both of these papers will be discussed in class. I encourage you to contact me or meet with me frequently during your research and writing process.

Calendar of Due Dates:

F 02/24 - Submit the name of the mathematician that you have decided to research. (May be rejected, for various reasons.)

W 03/01 - Submit document of major biographical information. Something that can be obtained by pretty easy google search. One-half page MAX, so you will have to "pick and choose" what to include.

W 03/15 - Submit list of references for paper.

W 03/22 - Biographical paper due. We will discuss further specifics in class. One key point -- your paper should contain information that I am not able to find by using my smartphone.

F 03/24 - Submit to me the theorem that will be the subject of your "Great Theorem" paper. Include with your submission a one-half page MAX explanation of why you think it may indeed be a "great theorem".

F 03/31 - Submit list of references for paper.

M 05/01 - "Great Theorem" paper due by 3:00pm, at my office Roop 339. We will discuss further specifics in class. Key point to keep in mind: This paper should be structured similarly to a new chapter of Dunham's book, that you are contributing. It is necessary (but not sufficient) to include a proof of your theorem. You must also place the theorem in a social/historical/mathematical context as Dunham does each time.
