EXTRA CREDIT

Feeling a little shaky? Double Click QuickTime Movie (long load time)

There are two opportunities to gain points in addition to the regular course work. I highly recommend that you place as much emphasis on the regular assignments during the course and turn them in on time. If you would like to gain some additional points, here are two to consider, BUT YOU CAN ONLY EARN A TOTAL OF 16 POINTS (from both, maximum, total, that's all, no more, etc.):

SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management)

We have a local chapter and extra credit is available to those who join the JMU student chapter. The local chapter meets every other week mid-day on Mondays in Room G3 of Zane Showker Hall. (Verify the meeting date/time at the display board.) You are invited. You will get TWO points towards your final grade for each meeting that you attend and sign the sign-in sheet. Total possible points: sixteen. For the meeting schedule, see the display board next to the Copy Center in Zane Showker Hall on the second floor near Room 201. For more information, contact the Chapter President. There is a National Chapter but, although it is a really good deal with fantastic resources, there are not extra credit points for joining.

AND/OR

MORE GOMEZ

Yes, our enthusiastic author has more to say. And so will you to earn some extra points. First, download gomeza.doc (in Word format) and read his chapter on "MANAGING QUALITY WITH HUMAN RESOURCES." Next, visit the site for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and look up the award criteria. Answer the following questions. Each question must be complete and should not exceed one page in length. Remember, bad grammar and spelling errors irritate me and your grade.

1) Describe the difference between the "conformance to requirements" approach to quality and the W. Edwards Deming approach to quality.

2) Explain through summarization (not regurgitation) the specific points of TQM, the seven deadly diseases, and the key TQM characteristics. Show how TQM works towards creating quality. What are the limits to TQM and the pitfalls related to implementing it.

3) Explain the six sigma management focus, how it applies to managing quality, and how it relates to the customer.

4) As a Vice President of Human Resources, how would the process of attainment of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award change your company.

You can earn a total of sixteen points (4 points each) by answering these questions. Your work should be submitted in typed form, double spaced, with one inch margins all around, and be bound with a staple. The front page must include your name, the title, "Extra Credit - Managing Quality," and the section number. Your work is due by the last class of the course and will not be returned. Your grade will be posted on this web site two weeks after the end of class. There will not be a link to the location but a direct address will be provided at the end of the course and you will be identified only be the last four digits of your JMU Student ID number.

This assignment must be submitted by the beginning of the last day the class meets to get credit. NO work will be accepted after the last class. The assignment will not be returned.

By the way, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was called "Galloping Gertie" and was prone to massive movement during specific wind loads as a result of the removal of bracing as a cost savings. It collapsed immediately after this video. The person from the car ran for safety before the center span dropped.
