Required SPSS Homework #4

due Tuesday, April 16, noon

-------------------------------------------------------------

(A) When it is operating correctly, a machine for manufacturing tennis balls produces a population mean weight ( μ ) of 57.6 grams. A sample of seven tennis ball manufactured has weights (in grams) {57.3, 57.4, 57.7, 57.5, 57.1, 57.8, 57.6}. We are interested in testing at level α = 0.05 if the process is in control against the alternative that the true population mean ( μ ) of the process now differs from 57.6 grams.

(1) Label the variable as weight, and list the data from SPSS in your online output, using a computer screenshot.

(2) Using SPSS, construct the Q-Q plot.

(3) Using complete sentences, explain whether or not the normality assumption is reasonable for this data set, based on your answer to part A2.

(4) Write the null and alternative hypotheses. Be sure to define any notation (i.e., define μ ) which you use.

(5) Using a computer screenshot, highlight in YELLOW the P-value from your SPSS output.

(6) Write the conclusion of the hypothesis test in statistical terms.

(7) Write the conclusion of the hypothesis test in regular English.

(8) Using a computer screenshot, highlight in PINK the 95% confidence interval on the population mean weight ( μ ) of the tennis balls, from your SPSS output.

(9) Write YES if your 95% confidence interval contains the null population mean of 57.6 grams, and write NO if your 95% confidence interval does not contain the null population mean of 57.6 grams. Highlight your word YES or NO in GREEN.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

(B) Final format:

(1) Write your name and JMU email address at the top of your output.

(2) Although you are allowed to receive help from others, list in parentheses the names of those who helped you and the names of those whom you helped, as well as what type of help was given. If you did not give or receive help, then write "No help" next to your name.

(3) WARNING: Sharing ELECTRONIC copies of SPSS homework in part or in full is a university honor code violation.

(4) Turn in all appropriate output from SPSS in the order in which the exercises are assigned.

(5) Label your output as parts B1, B2, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9 in BLUE.

(6) Avoid losing points due to sloppiness: Do NOT include extra junk; e.g., unrequested tables from SPSS.

(7) Post your homework as ONLY ONE .pdf file to Canvas. Do NOT email me your homework.
