Kermit - Macintosh

1) To install Kermit to a disk - To give a customer a copy of Kermit 0.993, get a disk from them - make sure the disk has enough room - approximately 700K free - then drag the Kermit folder from the desktop of the Helpdesk Mac onto the icon of the floppy disk. This will copy the entire folder onto the customers floppy. Drag the icon of the floppy to the trash to eject the floppy.

2) How to use Kermit - Kermit is a very simple telecom program that is the Mac equivalent of Procomm to Dos users. The program is command based - there are no dialing lists or places to input a number for Kermit to automatically dial. To start Kermit - the user will want to double click the icon that has the word VAX underneath in the Kermit folder. This will start Kermit with the correct settings for Raven. When a white screen appears, you are ready to dial the VAX.

To Dial into the modem pool for a JMU Vista prompt type -

for on campus users - atdt7011

or for off campus users - atdt5687011

The last four digits can be changed to 7011, 6825, 7986, 7988, or 7978.

3) A few additional notes - There are various pull down menus associated with this program, most of which the average user will never need. Here's a few that might be helpful -

Special - Hangup

Settings - Communications

set for a baud rate of 14400, parity None/8, and the modem (phone) serial portSettings - Character Set

normal characters = USA National (ASCII)8 bit characters = DEC GraphicsThose are some of the key setup points in the program - there are several other important pull down menus such as file - transfers which are fairly self explanatory.

4) Can't see when typing atdt7011 - this means no modem is attached - or the computer does not see one - helpful when troubleshooting. **The Helpdesk Mac will never show any text in the white VAX window because it doesn't have a modem attached.**
